Coinbase for Agents: Your AI Agent Can Now Trade and Pay with Coinbase

People are already using Large Language Models (LLMs) for a vast range of investment research and financial questions. But these LLMs often lack full context about your actual financial life and portfolio, and they can’t take actions on your behalf.

Today, we are changing that. Introducing Coinbase for Agents. Connect your favorite agent directly to your Coinbase account to trade, pay, and operate within limits you control. By giving your AI agent direct access to Coinbase, your agent can now do both financial reasoning and execution.

The way people interact with the internet is changing. People are increasingly moving through the world via agents rather than apps — and businesses are rapidly rebuilding their products to be agent-first in turn. As that ecosystem grows, Coinbase for Agents is positioned to be your trading and spending account at the center of it.

Here are a few examples of how you can start putting your agent to work today:

Imagine you want to rebalance your portfolio to 60% BTC, 20% ETH, and 20% SOL, but you want to gradually make your way toward this allocation over a period of months, taking advantage of short term market movements to "buy the dip". You can tell an agent your target allocation and even instruct it to set limit orders if the market drops by 5%, 10%, or 15% to help you get to this position. 

While crypto spot and derivatives trading is fully enabled today, we are rapidly expanding our capabilities to include trading stock and index funds, prediction markets and commodities. If it’s on Coinbase, we want it available for your agent. 

Your agent can monitor your cash position around the clock, making sure idle funds are always working — whether that's earning rewards, staying optimally allocated, or flagging positions that need attention. By analyzing your real-time holdings, it can execute moves that you’ve preset that keep your portfolio running efficiently, without the constant manual oversight.

You can also use your agent to pay for premium data and services, like paying for proprietary data to better inform trading decisions. Coinbase for Agents will soon be x402-enabled, so paying for anything from compute and statistics to images and services is seamless. 

Imagine you want to dollar-cost average into ETH at the optimal time of day. Just tell your agent your target and timeframe. It can pull 30 days of hourly price data to identify when ETH historically trades lowest, set a recurring $20 market buy at that time, and schedule it to run daily for the next two weeks. Set it and forget it.

We built limits and control from day 1. Your agent can operate inside its own isolated portfolio, with no external visibility or access into your other holdings, or it can simply use your main Coinbase account. It only ever touches what you've explicitly permissioned it to do.

And soon, you’ll also be able to set exact rules: maximum trade size, what it can interact with, how much it can spend. The agent works within those parameters. Think of it like giving a gift card rather than handing over your bank account. You define the limits. Your agent executes within them.

Compliance is also built in. Payments made on Coinbase for Agents are subject to the same transaction monitoring and KYT checks that power Coinbase — so you get built-in compliance without having to set or build anything.

Connecting to your Coinbase account via an agent is just one way we’re bringing AI-enabled crypto trading and payments to users. For an even simpler start, we also integrated a powerful agent right into the Coinbase app itself.

Coinbase Advisor is a dedicated in-app agent to provide recommendations and guidance directly to users. It's a SEC/CFTC registered financial Advisor.¹  This makes it easy for any user to leverage AI without externally connecting to anything. 

These products are the start of Coinbase's full consumer agentic suite, catering to everyone from the everyday investor to the autonomous agent operating entirely on its own. And for businesses, Coinbase Payments rounds out the picture with agentic money acceptance too. Whatever your relationship with AI looks like today, there's a Coinbase product built for it.

We've been building toward this for a while. It started with AgentKit in 2024, giving developers the ability to put wallets in the hands of agents. Then x402, an agentic payments protocol created last year. And now: Coinbase for Agents to bring your Coinbase account into the AI agent you already use.
