Worldcoin (WLD) is a digital currency project that aims to create a global identity and financial network through its unique World ID system. This privacy-focused network allows users to verify their identity online while safeguarding personal information. To participate, individuals download the World App, a wallet application that facilitates the creation of a World ID. Verification is completed using a physical imaging device called the Orb. The WLD token functions as a utility token with governance features, allowing users to engage in decision-making processes regarding the future development of the Worldcoin protocol.

Worldcoin’s ecosystem centers around the World ID, a privacy-preserving global identity network designed to verify the uniqueness and humanness of its users. To create a World ID, individuals download the World App and complete verification through an Orb, a device equipped with multispectral sensors. These sensors confirm a user’s identity without storing personal data, as all images are deleted on the device by default. The WLD token, an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, supports transactions primarily on the Optimism network, enabling faster and more cost-effective operations within the Worldcoin protocol.

Worldcoin seeks to enhance global access to decentralized identity and financial infrastructure. The World ID can help ensure fairness in airdrops, prevent bot-driven attacks like Sybil attacks, and support the equitable distribution of scarce resources. It also aims to facilitate democratic participation and new governance models worldwide. Users may utilize the WLD token for transactions within the World App, for payments in other compatible wallets, or to express approval for specific community initiatives or governance proposals.

Worldcoin was founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern. Sam Altman, known for his role as co-founder and CEO of OpenAI and former president of Y Combinator, played a key role in the project's development. Initial research and development were led by Tools for Humanity (TFH) and various partners. Worldcoin has attracted strong backing from investors such as a16z, Khosla Ventures, Bain Capital Crypto, Blockchain Capital, and Tiger Global. Before its official launch, thousands of individuals across multiple continents completed the Orb verification process, contributing to the project’s early growth.
