Decentraland, powered by the cryptocurrency token MANA, is a virtual reality platform built on the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to create, explore, and monetize digital experiences within a decentralized virtual world. Users can purchase plots of virtual land, known as LAND, which they can develop, customize, and generate value from through various applications and content. Decentraland utilizes two types of tokens: MANA, an ERC-20 token used for transactions within the platform, and LAND, an ERC-721 non-fungible token representing ownership of virtual real estate. The platform is entirely user-owned, fostering a decentralized environment for creative and commercial activities.

Decentraland operates on a three-layer protocol powered by Ethereum smart contracts. The consensus layer manages ownership of LAND, ensuring secure transactions and tracking property rights. The land content layer renders the visual content within the virtual world, including 3D scenes, applications, and interactive experiences. The real-time layer facilitates user interactions, allowing participants to communicate and engage with one another. MANA tokens serve as the platform’s currency, used to purchase LAND, avatars, wearables, and other virtual goods. LAND tokens represent unique, non-fungible digital parcels that users can develop, trade, or lease within Decentraland’s decentralized ecosystem.

Decentraland offers a variety of use cases for creators, businesses, and individuals. Content creators can build interactive experiences, games, and virtual galleries, while businesses can establish virtual storefronts, advertise, or host events. Users can monetize their LAND through leasing, paid experiences, or selling virtual goods in the Decentraland marketplace. The platform also supports the creation and trading of unique digital assets, including NFTs like collectibles and virtual real estate. Additionally, Decentraland serves as a social hub, providing a space for online communities to gather, interact, and engage in shared experiences within a decentralized environment.

Decentraland was co-founded by Ariel Meilich and Esteban Ordano in 2015, initially as a proof of concept for assigning ownership of digital real estate using blockchain technology. The project evolved from a simple 2D experiment into a fully immersive 3D virtual world. Following a token sale in 2017, Decentraland launched its closed beta in 2019, with the platform officially opening to the public in February 2020. Since its launch, Decentraland has grown into a vibrant virtual world where users have created diverse experiences, from interactive games and 3D art installations to virtual events and digital marketplaces.
