Within the game, players can select from three major factions: MUD, representing humankind, ONI, a consortium of alien races, and Ustur, sentient androids. Players have the opportunity to explore stars, interact with other players, mine resources, and construct space stations and ships. The assets acquired in the game may potentially be exchanged for real-world value.

Star Atlas operates on the Solana blockchain, which is known for its transaction times and transaction fees. The game uses the ATLAS token as in-game currency for acquiring assets. It also features a marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that function as ships and other in-game equipment. Pablo Quiroga is the founder of a supplement startup and worked in biotechnology before co-founding Star Atlas.
