Coinbase for Agents adds equities and x402 payments
September 22, 2026

TL;DR Coinbase for Agents now lets you trade stocks and ETFs plus pay for data and models to make more informed trades, all via your agent and Coinbase login.
As of today, Coinbase for Agents MCP (model context protocol) lets your agent trade stocks and use micropayments to access on-demand data, models, and other services - in addition to the crypto and derivatives features already available. With x402 now live alongside equities, Coinbase for Agents is the most comprehensive agentic trading tool available today.
Our AiFi stack just got a little taller. Agents can already handle the work you’d rather not do, like watching a position overnight, running the same trade on a schedule, and checking a filing the moment it drops. Once you give your agent access to multiple assets and micropayments, you can have it watch for conditions you define, pay to pull the data that confirms them, and place the trade - all inside limits you set. These complex flows are tedious for a person, yet trivial for an agent.
That's the idea behind AiFi, the financial system we're building for trading that never sleeps. We spent years making crypto simple enough for anyone to use. And now, we’re bringing that same approach to agentic trading, making it easier to get started and giving your agent more to do.
Stocks, meet agents
Coinbase for Agents is becoming the Everything Exchange for AI agents. You can already set your agent to trade crypto and derivatives, and starting today, you can give it access to real US equities too. Fully owned stocks and ETFs, the same assets available in Coinbase's retail app.
Securities trade through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. (member FINRA/SIPC) with Apex Fintech Solutions handling clearing and custody, the same infrastructure behind our existing equities product. That means your agent gets access to thousands of US stocks and ETFs, 24/5 trading, fractional shares from $1, and zero commission.¹
We just took Coinbase's existing, regulated equities business, and opened up to a new kind of user: your agent. Tokenized equities are also on the roadmap outside the U.S.
Your agent, now with more information
The other half of today's launch is x402 payments: the part that makes the equities news truly useful. Built into Coinbase for Agents, x402 is a payments protocol that can let your agent pay a few cents for data or model inference, such as an earnings summary, an onchain analytics query, or a second model’s analysis, and act on the results immediately. It all comes from the same balance used to trade, with no subscriptions, API keys, or separate accounts to fund and manage.
This used to be a crypto-only capability. Now that it works across equities too. You can tell your agent to research and trade any asset on the platform in one easy loop: find the signal, pay for the data to confirm it, and place the trade. One login connects your agent to research, payments, and trading in one place.
x402 is gaining traction. In just over a year, it’s already processed 230M+ transactions and $54M+ in volume. Coinbase is the #1 facilitator, processing more than half of all x402 transactions.
And to be clear, you still set the terms. You can isolate your agent to a specific portfolio for crypto-only trading, or configure asset access, spend limits, and per-action approvals. Sandboxed accounts for equities are coming soon too. Your agent acts and you decide what it can do.
What this looks like in practice
Here are a few ways we’ve been putting these new features to the test:
Sarah, on the marketing team, set her agent to research NVDA, AAPL, and GOOG ahead of an earnings cycle. Using x402, the agent paid a few cents for analyst sentiment and options flow data, summarized its findings, and then was instructed to place fractional buys across all three stocks.
Lincoln, our AI product lead, asked his agent to monitor an ETH position. It checks onchain flow data, detects a spike in exchange inflows (a potentially bearish signal) and executes a pre-set stop-loss, without Lincoln having to watch the screen.
Ash, our content wizard, told his agent to track large or unusually active wallets each morning. It pays a cent to check the data, cross-references trending tokens, and buys a small position when a wallet hits certain predefined conditions — all within the spending limit he set.
None of these require you to open five tabs, pay for subscriptions, or babysit the trade. You set the strategy and the guardrails. The agent does the watching, the paying, and the executing.
Get started
Setting up Coinbase for Agents takes as few as 3 clicks. In Perplexity or Grok, search for Coinbase in their Connectors or Plugins tab, then sign into your Coinbase account. In ChatGPT, Claude, or via your favorite agent, you can set it up via MCP.
Just like we made crypto accessible to millions of people, we're now lowering the entry barrier to starting agentic trading — while dramatically raising the ceiling for what your agent can do with your money.
