ShapeShift is a cryptocurrency trading platform that offers no-commission crypto trading and self-custody. In other words, one can trade cryptos on the ShapeShift platform without paying any commission. Also, ShapeShift.com enables users to acquire crypto with traditional currency and trade, track, and secure their crypto through a simple web interface. Users have full control of their keys on the platform.

ShapeShift aims to become an influential crypto company by building a digital asset platform that delights, protects, empowers, and inspires people. The platform envisions a borderless financial system built on open, decentralized protocols. In order to achieve this, the ecosystem offers a suite of products and services. They are the ShapeShift Platform, KeepKey Hardware Wallet, and CoinCap.io. The entire codebase and technology seek to be open-source in the future to bring ShapeShift in line with its true vision of becoming immutable decentralized finance (Defi).

The Shapeshift FOXtoken is a standard ERC20 token created by ShapeShift. FOX serves as the governance token for the ShapeShift DAO (decentralized autonomous organization). This means that the token holders can vote on proposals connected to the operation and treasury of the DAO. The token supports and provides utility for an independent, cross-chain crypto trading ecosystem and portfolio manager for user self-sovereignty.

As the ShapeShift ecosystem expands, users can earn FOX tokens for the activity that generates revenue for the DAO via affiliate partnerships (i.e., earning yield, trading crypto and NFTs (non-fungible toekns), purchasing swag, etc.). The ShapeShift DAO earns revenues, and users earn FOX tokens, representing entitlement to those revenues.

ShapeShift's governance process has three steps. The forum is the first step in the proposal creation process. A forum is where ideas can be proposed, developed, collaborated, and then refined, getting ready for the next phase in the proposal process. So, an idea is posted in the forum to seek community feedback. The second step is ideation. Once a proposal or idea meets the criteria to progress, it can leave the forum for a more formal vote at ShapeShift.com and move to the boardroom, where FOX token holders can start voting. The "Ideation" section is where users find the early stages of developing proposals. The voting style in the boardroom is much like an upvote (comment option is also available) and helps show the greater DAO community the proposals that are increasing in popularity. The format is drafted into ShapeShift Community Proposal (SCP) format in this step. This draft is posted in the forum in the proposal discussion category for final feedback. In order to gauge sentiment, a for-or-against poll is included. The final step is live voting. Here the voting period is set for 72 hours. The quorum is a minimum of four million FOX.

Erik Voorhees and Jon cofounded ShapeShift in 2014 to align with the ethos of decentralized finance. ShapeShift is based in the UK.

Voorhees graduated in the field of business leadership and political economics from the University of Puget Sound. Before ShapeShift, he cofounded Coinapult, a Bitcoin company, and SatoshiDice, a Bitcoin gambling game. He also worked for several other companies like BitInstant, Podium Group, and Better Homes.

In 2017, the platform acquired KeepKey to bring easy cold storage to its users. The total (maximum) supply of FOX is 1,000,001,337 FOX tokens.

FOX token holders who provide liquidity to the FOX/ETH pool on Uniswap V2 and stake FOX-ETH-UNI-LP token in the ShapeShift Staking Rewards contract have earned a proportional share of 15,768,000 FOX tokens. Another method of earning is Rainfall. Rainfall rewards FOX holders with cryptos when users trade on ShapeShift. The more FOX tokens one holds, the better their chances of winning a Rainfall reward.
