Hivemapper (HONEY) is a decentralized global mapping network that was initiated in November 2022. It provides compensation to contributors for collecting high-volume 4K street-level imagery using dashcams through a Drive-to-Earn model. The dashcams used are a combination of a camera that records street-level imagery and a blockchain mining device. Users who operate these dashcams are compensated in HONEY, Hivemapper's native cryptocurrency token. The project seeks to create a global digital street-level imagery map and keep track of physical changes around the globe over time.

Hivemapper operates by leveraging a vast number of people who drive extensively during their day-to-day job to collect street-level imagery. This approach aims to result in lower cost maps as mapping is a by-product and not the primary activity. It also strives to lead to more up-to-date maps as more contributors contribute to the map, resulting in the same location being mapped more frequently. Contributors receive compensation for mapping unmapped roads and for updating old data. They are also compensated when data is consumed by customers. The magnitude of compensation varies per region depending on the Multiplier.

Hivemapper has a wide range of potential use cases. High-quality maps are crucial to public and private enterprises, including the transportation and logistics industries, as well as sectors such as insurance, real estate, utilities, and government. Hivemapper aims to address the problems of expensive map data for businesses, uneven coverage and freshness of map data, data without remuneration, and maps prone to censorship. By enabling contributors to collect high-quality, street-level imagery and compensating them with HONEY tokens, Hivemapper seeks to share the economic benefits of the global mapping network with the people who build the map.

Hivemapper was initiated by Ariel Seidman and Evan Moss in November 2022. The project was designed to address the problems associated with traditional mapmaking methods, such as the high cost of collecting road-level imagery and positioning data, and the consolidation of mapmaking among a few companies with the resources to reach global scale. Hivemapper's approach of leveraging a vast number of people who already drive extensively during their day-to-day job to collect street-level imagery aims to result in a more cost-effective and up-to-date mapping solution. Since its inception, Hivemapper has seen steady growth and continues to evolve, striving to improve its mapping capabilities and expand its global reach.
