Acuity is a content platform designed as an alternative to the World Wide Web and is based on a blockchain. Unlike other platforms that claim to have extensive back ends and identity verification, Acuity is decentralized, and there is no back end. This implies that no “service” is provided. Thus, the platform is open-source, peer-to-peer software and does not have a warranty.
Social media has primarily come into play and significantly transformed the publishing content on websites. Users on a website enable rich interactions, and social networks have been emerging on a large scale. However, the potential has not yet been realized fully. Therefore, the platform realizes that social media needs to be decentralized.
Further, the platform has identified that a lot of content is being lost, both on the web and centralized social media platforms, as there is no autonomous structure and collaborative hosting. Thus, the platform aims to allow anyone to host someone else’s content to ensure that it stays alive. Besides this, all the content published is publicly readable by anyone. The platform seeks to ensure that browsing history, following profiles, and local settings are only stored on the user’s device. And since there is no centralized back end, it is difficult for the user’s browsing history to be tracked, making privacy the foremost factor.
The platform operates on Polkadot and IPFS (InterPlanetary File System), a peer-to-peer protocol made for making the web safer, faster, and more open. IPFS is for storing and sharing content.
The platform aims to be censorship-proof wherein, while publishing, the content is first made available from the device through IPFS. And on blockchain transactions containing the IPFS, nodes that trust the publisher will pin the content for it to propagate across the system.
The platform has a small network fee to be paid for each transaction. ACU is the native token of the platform. Also, the platform is working to facilitate the trading of ACU against many other assets without a third party. The coin also functions as the governance token for the network.
