SAPIEN is the network’s ERC20 utility token. Holders can stake SAPIEN in the Sapien Vault to earn a share of the network’s staking economics. All stakers participate in the same vault, while participants who want to earn from validation can additionally commit their stake as collateral behind agentic validators. Passive stakers are not exposed to slashing simply by staking. Active validators can earn from the work they perform, but collateral committed to validation can be slashed for poor performance. When slashing occurs, the value remains within the vault, increasing the pro rata value of the remaining participants’ shares. The vault is currently supplemented by treasury funded staking rewards, while the longer term model is designed around economic activity generated by the validator network itself.

Sapien developed Proof of Quality after two years and 195 million tasks spent learning how difficult quality is to measure reliably at scale. That work showed that individual judgment is noisy, automated reviewers struggle on ambiguous cases, and expert judgment is too scarce to apply at full depth everywhere. The lesson was consistent: reliable judgment needs structure, and scalable judgment needs expertise to go where it adds the most value. PoQ grew out of that experience as a repeatable evaluation system for AI work.
