Notable statements

Rep. Maxine Waters has 4 statement(s) about crypto.

“President Biden’s Executive Order on digital assets is an important step in furthering our understanding of how cryptocurrencies and other digital assets will shape the future of our financial system and of our society. Of particular note, I am heartened to see that the Executive Order places an emphasis on studying the potential of a U.S. central bank digital currency (CBDC). With working families across the country looking to rebuild from the pandemic by turning to financial alternatives like cryptocurrency, ensuring that people are not vulnerable to fraud, manipulation, and abuse is imperative. As Chairwoman of the Financial Services Committee, I am proud that our Committee has been a leader in exploring the emergence of digital assets, convening hearings and briefings on cryptocurrency-related investor and consumer protection issues, the potential of central bank digital currencies, the role of cryptocurrency market exchanges, and the rapid rise of stablecoins. My Committee looks forward to working closely with the Administration on digital assets. We will continue to lead on this subject by holding additional digital assets hearings, and considering appropriate legislation.”

Representative Waters Press Release from the United States House Committee on Financial Services March 9, 2022

"As more people invest in and use cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins, the Committee will continue its efforts to look at how they are affecting many aspects of our lives and our financial system. In particular, regulators and policymakers must work to ensure that any innovation in this space is responsible, that it provides robust consumer and investor protection, that it mitigates environmental impact, and that financial inclusion is front and center. We will also continue to investigate the development of a U.S. Central Bank Digital Currency that may provide a safe, stable, and secure method of instantaneous digital payment."

Representative Waters Press Release from the United States House Committee on Financial Services February 8, 2022

"From the start, our Committee has recognized that the explosive growth of digital assets presents a variety of risks and opportunities for our economy and communities, especially communities of color, that have been left behind by our financial system. Their voices must be heard in the decision-making and regulatory process."

Representative Waters Press Release from the United States House Committee on Financial Services February 8, 2022

"As the U.S. explores the potential for our own CBDC, I believe the design of this digital dollar should balance the need for privacy protections while retaining mechanisms to prevent money laundering and other illicit uses. I also strongly believe that a U.S. CBDC should be designed to promote financial inclusion. These are values that I believe the Democrats and Republicans share, but values that other countries, like China, in this digital assets race share. That is why it is critical for the U.S. to stay competitive in this field to ensure that our values prevail as the way that the global financial system evolves."
