Crypto and Creators

Coinbase Institute: Insights Series

Crypto and blockchain technologies are bringing new opportunities to creators across a variety of fields. Whether it’s artists, musicians, writers, or developers, blockchain and crypto offer new ways to monetize, distribute, and protect creative work that are already redefining the creator economy.

How It Works

With over 200 million active creators around the world, the creator economy is booming. But significant barriers to efficient distribution, visibility, and compensation persist. Today’s platforms rely on algorithms that prioritize high-engagement content in support of ad-driven revenue models that fail to reward creators who have less visibility.

Blockchain technology offers tools that can address these and other issues, including intellectual property protection and alternative compensation models, through more efficient distribution. At its core, blockchain is a decentralized, distributed ledger that records transactions across multiple computers. This decentralized nature means that no single entity has control over the network, fostering transparency and trust. Smart contracts—self-executing contracts with the terms directly written into code—also play a pivotal role. These contracts automatically execute when predefined conditions are met, facilitating new means of payment and contract enforcement.

Use Cases and Significance

These technologies support a range of use cases that can benefit creators:

NFTs: Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) represent ownership of a unique digital asset and can be bought, sold, or traded on blockchain-based marketplaces. For artists and musicians, NFTs provide a way to sell their work directly to consumers, bypassing traditional channels like galleries and music labels that often take a large share of the profits. Each sale is recorded on the blockchain, ensuring transparency and trust between creator and customer. Moreover, smart contracts can be set to provide artists with a percentage of royalties each time their work is resold, enabling a continuous revenue stream.

Copyright Protection: Blockchain’s immutable ledger offers a revolutionary way for creators to secure proof of ownership for their work. By registering their work on the blockchain, creators can establish an unalterable record of the origin and creation date, generating evidence for copyright claims. This can be particularly beneficial for writers, photographers, and designers who frequently battle plagiarism and unauthorized use of their content.

Crowdfunding and Direct Patronage: Blockchain also enables new payment models for funding and patronage. On platforms like Ethereum, creators can run decentralized crowdfunding campaigns, using stablecoins to enable faster payments with lower fees. This funding model lets fans support the projects they care about, directly and near-instantaneously.

Lower Transaction Costs: With crypto, creators can connect with a global audience and receive payments with fewer frictions. Traditional financial systems often involve high transaction fees, exchange rates, and delays when handling payments, particularly internationally. Creators can bypass these hurdles onchain, receiving payments from audiences anywhere in the world instantaneously and at a lower cost.

Easier and Enhanced Connections: The combined powers of AI and crypto can further help creators. By automating processes like crypto wallet setup and smart contract management, AI helps make blockchain accessible even to creators with little to no technical experience. Further, AI-driven discoverability can help creators connect with fans who share specific interests, boosting visibility without traditional algorithms. And while smart contracts enable real-time payments, AI can optimize royalties based on engagement metrics.

Conclusion

As crypto and blockchain technologies continue to evolve, so will their applications, making them a cornerstone for empowering creativity and fostering innovation. But regulatory clarity is needed. Clear rules that address areas like content moderation, privacy, tax assessment, and copyright and IP enforcement onchain can provide additional certainty to the ecosystem, ensuring wider adoption. Despite these challenges, the foundational benefits of crypto and blockchain for creators point to a promising future that redefines how art and ideas are both shared and valued.
