Yesterday, the Federal Election Committee voted unanimously to allow political campaigns and political action committees to accept donations in the form of bitcoin. Congressman Jared Polis’ campaign became the first campaign to accept bitcoin for donations and has already processed over $1,000 worth of donations using Coinbase’s merchant services. We expect this to be the first of many political organizations to embrace bitcoin donations!
Coinbase’s merchant tools make it easy for campaigns and political action committees to accept bitcoin under FEC guidelines. Our API can be used to collect relevant information and ensure that transparency and accountability requirements are maintained. We also offer a secure, reliable wallet solution that enables campaigns to safely store bitcoin and automatically convert those bitcoin to USD at their discretion.
The complete FEC ruling can be found here.
