Today, Coinbase announced the addition of former Congressman Kendrick Meek to its Global Advisory Council, which helps advise Coinbase's executive leadership team on ensuring all Americans – regardless of background – have access to the financial system.

Congressman Meek served as U.S. Representative for Florida’s 17th Congressional District from 2003 to 2011. During his time in Congress, he was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means, the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, and the Congressional Black Caucus. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Before his tenure in Congress, Kendrick was a member of the Florida House and Senate.

52 million Americans own crypto, 41% of whom identify as racially diverse, including Black and Hispanic Americans who are also disproportionately impacted by the shortcomings of traditional finance. A recent Coinbase survey showed that nearly half of Black Americans say they have been negatively impacted by traditional finance, and only 1 in 3 believe that all ethnicities and races have equal access to the financial system.

“As we work to address the compounding economic stressors of the traditional financial system, digital assets offer new opportunities to address the systemic issues that have plagued our financial system and failed too many Americans. And for Black and Hispanic Americans and other underserved communities, the need for a more equitable and inclusive financial system has never been more urgent,” said Congressman Meek. “I’m looking forward to using my seat on the Council to support American leadership in shaping the future of digital assets and building in protections for vulnerable communities.”

The Global Advisory Council was established with the purpose of bringing together accomplished leaders with strategic insights to advise the executive leadership team. In collaboration with members of the Coinbase Asset Management Academic and Regulatory Advisory Council, which comprises former regulators and industry experts, the Global Council actively contributes to advancing Coinbase's vision of ushering in a new era of the internet through crypto and blockchain technologies.

Just last month, former Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa and former Mayor of Atlanta Atlanta Mayor and Senior Advisor to the Biden White House Keisha Lance Bottoms joined the council. In addition to Villaraigosa and Lance Bottoms, Meek joins the council alongside former Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy (D-FL); former Defense Secretary Mark Esper; former U.S. Homeland Security Advisor Fran Townsend; Dave Urban; former Senator Patrick Toomey (R-PA); former Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH); Chris Lehane, Vice President of Public Works at OpenAI; and John Anzalone, founder of Impact Research Polling.
