The case for perpetual futures
The global crypto derivatives market represents 75% of crypto trading volume worldwide, clearly indicating strong demand from traders for products like perpetual futures. Why are crypto derivatives such a high percentage of overall crypto trading volume? The ability to trade using margin gives traders increased capital efficiency and access to the crypto market with less upfront investment. Being able to seamlessly go long and short, traders can also use derivatives to manage risk on their underlying crypto assets
Spot + derivatives in one interface
Today, Coinbase Advanced customers can trade 4 perpetual contracts: BTC, ETH, LTC, and XRP. Contracts initially offer up to 5X leverage (XRP offers up to 3X leverage) and are settled in USDC, a globally-trusted stablecoin. We plan to add even more contracts in the coming months. Customers will enjoy a low introductory fee rate of 0% (maker) and 0.03% (taker)¹. They can access these contracts on advanced.coinbase.com, and we’re working to offer mobile trading in the near future.
With the launch of perpetual futures, Coinbase Advanced customers can now access both our highly liquid spot markets and derivatives in one integrated, secure, and easy-to-use interface. In addition, they can unlock new strategies with powerful tools like advanced order types, TradingView charts, and APIs to automate trading.
Rigorous compliance standards
We’ve been working with our Coinbase Advanced customers to understand how we can better serve them, and they confirmed that access to advanced trading products on a trusted platform is a top need. Today, only a few trusted players exist in the global crypto derivatives market that provide the security and transparency that crypto traders need to trade with confidence. In addition to our institutional customers, Coinbase Advanced customers can now access perpetual futures contracts offered by Coinbase International Exchange, which have been built within rigorous compliance standards.
How are we different?
As the most secure and compliant crypto exchange, customers are confident that their assets are safe with Coinbase. Our publicly filed, audited financial statements show that we hold customer assets 1:1.
Our perpetual futures exchange is well capitalized via its Insurance Fund and Liquidity Support Program funded in USDC, a highly-liquid stablecoin, not an exchange token.
We have an experienced, dedicated risk team. Members of our team have decades of experience managing trading and credit businesses across a range of economic cycles.
Coinbase does not engage in market making. The liquidity on our exchanges is provided by established and independent liquidity providers who have undergone thorough compliance reviews.
We’ll continue to work with our retail advanced traders to evolve Coinbase Advanced into a more powerful and versatile trading platform – now a destination for both spot and derivatives trading, all from the most trusted name in crypto.
